Co-solver of APVV project of Prokop, P. (principal investigator): Ecology of sexual selection. APVV No. 20-0081 (till 2025) Models of sexual selection primarily involve Fisher's runaway sexual selection, selection for good genes, handicap principle and sexual conflict. These processes are, however, significantly influenced by global environmental change which cause direct and indirect types of environmental pollution. In this project, we use a well-known model spider species Pisaura mirabilis in which males exhibit conspicuous form of nuptial feeding (male transfer of nutrient to the female) during courtship to test whether environmental change influences evolution of mating behavior. Specifically, we will investigate both direct effects (i.e., heavy metals accumulation) and indirect effects (i.e., decreased prey availability) of environmental pollution on sexual selection. Furthermore, we deal evolutionary questions regarding physiological costs of nuptial feeding to males. Results of this investigation will have broad implications for the evolution of sexual selection in animals under environmental change.

Co-solver of VEGA project of Šerá, B. (principal investigator): 2023-2026 VEGA [VEGA 1/0255/23]: The road network as a linear element for the migration and spread of organisms in the conditions of ongoing climate change. Thematically, the project is a follow-up to the previous VEGA project, which significantly addresses biodiversity in the open landscape with special attention to roads and highways.

Responsible solver M. Molnárová - VEGA 1/0332/18 Toxic effects of heavy metals to photosynthetic organisms and biota in the environmentally polluted localities.The project focused on studying of reciprocal interactions of several metals in the environment of already closed mines (Pezinok and Pernek, Medzibrod, Dúbrava) during year 2018-2021. Samples of water, soil and plants were collected at these localities, which were later analyzed and evaluated in the laboratory. From several plant species, the accumulation of various metals has been observed in those parts (e.g. leaves, roots) that are also used in traditional medicine or in the kitchen to taste food (e.g. black alder, willow species, common nettle, black horehound, pellitory of the wall). Other studied plants in water reservoirs, were suitable plants that can be used in bioremediation of polluted waters (e.g. broadleaf or greater pond sedge). In laboratory conditions, the reciprocal effects of two metals on algae and plants were monitored in order to better understand their phytotoxic effects on plant models, with the subsequent use of this knowledge in phytoremediation of contaminated areas.
