APVV-18-0282 - Development of preparative chromatography new configurations for 2-deoxysaccharides preparation (2019 - 2023, investigator). The proposed project concerned on to development of new procedures for reaction mixtures purification and optimization of synthesis of fluoro- and azido- derivatives of 2-deoxysacharides. A new separation system consists of tandem elution and displacement preparative chromatography will be developed, which will minimize the necessary isolation costs and allows to obtain pure isomers of selected 2-deoxysaccharides in the high purity and with a significantly higher effectivity. The solution of the problem could be optimization of reaction conditions in attempt to obtain more preferable ratio of epimers which have appropriate properties for effective separation using new developed preparative chromatographic systems. Expected project results strengthen the international position of chemical research and production of chemical specialties in Slovakia.
APVV-15-0466 - Preparation of natural flavors by biotransformation using the comprehensive analytical methods. (2019 - 2023, principal investigator). As part of the project solution, comprehensive analytical methods were developed that enable the analysis of all relevant parameters needed to monitor the process of natural flavours biotransformation. New technologies have also been developed, enabling the extraction of natural flavours from the medium after biotransformation with significant energy savings and at lower temperatures than previously used technologies. The utility model has been assigned to these technologies and a patent application has been filed. Biotransfor- mations of acetophenone to 1-phenylethanol were performed in a two-enzyme system. Using newly developed comprehensive analytical methods, the results of biotransformation were determined, at 87% conversion, the final product represented up to 99.9% of the desired S-isomer of 1-phenylethanol, which confirms the high enantiospecific bioconversion.
APVV-18-0255 - Catalytic depolymerization of lignin from raw materials for the production of advanced biofuels (2019-2022, investigator). Advanced biofuels are utilizing biomass feedstock that has no high economic value except being utilized as biofuel. This fact ensures high greenhouse gas (GHG) savings with only little risk of changing indirect land-use. They do not compete directly with any agricultural land intended for food and feed markets. The main objective of the project is to develop a profitable and economically efficient technological process of processing the secondary stream from the production of bioethanol from cellulosic biomass of lignin by the process of combining the process of solvolysis, hydrocracking and hydrotreating in the presence of mixed oxide catalysts. Lignin decomposition to bio-aromatics and/or high-octane components in fuels. Testing properties of prepared bio-components and determining the emission profile of fuels.
APVV-20-0317 - Research and development of new recovery processes of volatile aroma
compounds from biotechnological broth (2021-2025), principal investigator). The goal of this project is the development of a profitable and environmentally friendly process in line with green
chemistry guidelines allowing the production and isolation of aromatic substances from
biotechnological broth. To achieve this goal a combination of industrially established and
emerging separation techniques will be used. The chosen techniques are selective, compatible
and their combination ensures both high purity and maximal recovery of aromatic substances.
This combination minimises the use of distillation techniques, what brings about reduced
energy consumption and elimination of thermal load, thus preventing product decomposition.
The separation process is mainly built around colloidal milling, nanofiltration and adsorption.
In parallel, comprehensive analytical techniques will be developed to decipher complex
matrices and enable reliable identification and quantification of natural aroma compounds at
every step of the process. During the initial phase laboratory research will be conducted. The
findings will then be implemented on production scale. An adjustable device will be created to
facilitate the isolation of aroma molecules from highly complex biotechnological broth, which
is extremely challenging and at times outright impossible by standard techniques. This device
will not only allow monitoring at every stage of the process, but also permit quick adjustments
of parameters when and where it is necessary.
