VEGA: 1/0541/23 2023-2026. The integrative taxonomy of Elmidae and Dryopidae (Insecta: Coleoptera) from Borneo - oe of the major evolutionary biodiversity hotspots. Principal invesdtigator: Kodada Ján, Doc. RNDr., CSC. Borneo, along with part of Indochina, is one of Southeast Asia’s major evolutionary biodiversity hotspots. Its recent fauna is probably the result of in situ diversification associated with the accumulation of immigrants. The beetles of the families Elmidae and Dryopidae are morphologically and physiologically adapted to life in the aquatic environment. However, some genera of Dryopidae (e.g. Sostea, Geoparnus, Spalacosostea) are adapted to live in soil, leaf litter, or vegetation. The diversity and evolution of these groups’ are little explored, despite the almost cosmopolitan distribution and importance of organisms in eco-enviro studies. The project addresses the issues of taxonomy and phylogeny of Bornean species through an integrative taxonomy approach based on mitochondrial and nuclear markers in combination with morphological features and tries to identify common evolutionary patterns and trends in phylogeny and distribution.

VEGA: 2/0111/25. 2025-2028. Stability through innovation: Optimizing the taxonomy of Elmidae beetles through the use of large-scale DNA data. Responsible researcher for PRIFUK: Kodada Ján, Doc. RNDr., CSC. Freshwater ecosystems are under increasing pressure from human activity and are suffering from an alarming loss of biodiversity, which threatens their functioning and basic services. The effort to understand and protect freshwater biodiversity is crucial for their preservation and ensuring the resilience of ecosystems for future generations. Beetles of the Elmidae family, important freshwater inhabitants, include ~1500 species in >150 genera, but taxonomy of the family is not stable and much of the diversity of this group is yet to be described. The classification of taxa within the Elmidae is mostly based on about morphology, which is necessary but has its limitations and can be misleading. DNA barcoding a high-throughput sequencing offers rapid species delimitation and phylogeny reconstruction, which changes our understanding the diversity and evolution of Elmidae. The goal of the project is to stabilize the family system, to clearly define it problematic genera and improve knowledge of species diversity using DNA data obtained by modern by NGS sequencing techniques.
