project VEGA 2/0147/21 (2021-2024): Evolution of soil properties and vegetation on the former agricultural land (investigator)
The project is focused on the changes in soil properties and vegetation development in agricultural land, which has taken place since the end of 19th century due to the various socio-economic changes. Such research is essential for its optimal contemporary use and management also due to the fact that it covers large areas in Slovakia. Selected study areas include various conditions and history of land use: 1) Podunajská nížina lowland (former fields & vineyards, calcareous soils), 2) Borská nížina lowland (former fields & vineyards, sandy siliceous soils), 3) Malé Karpaty Mts. (former fields & vineyards, siliceous soils), 4) Považský Inovec Mts. (former fields & pastures, calcareous soils), 5) Liptov (former fields & pastures, siliceous & calcareous soils). The project has an interdisciplinary character and intersectoral team composition. For soils, changes and development in both basic and special soil properties will be studied, vegetation part is focused on the various aspects of secondary succession.
Project VEGA 2/0118/18 (2018-2020) Evolution of soil properties and vegetation on the former agricultural land (investigator)

Project VEGA 1/0945/15 (2015-2017) Fragipan in soils of Slovakia and its influence on processes in soils and landscape (investigator)
The results obtained in the course of the project showed that the soils with fragipan horizon are common in Slovakia. The precursors of the occurrence of the fragipan horizon are, in particular, the low content of organic matter and the soil texture dominated by a silt fraction with a limited proportion of clay. Compared to other soils, the fragipan horizons were characterized by almost complete absence of the structural pores. The collapse of soil structure has a direct impact on increasing bulk density and soil penetrometric resistance, on reduced infiltration capability and water retention capacity, and on the biological processes that are limited by the development of the root system just inside the polygonal network of pores. The results will enable the introduction of the fragipan horizon into the Morphogenetic Soil Classification System of Slovakia at its closest approximation.
Project APVV-0866-12 (2013 - 2017) Evaluation of ecosystem functions and services of the cultural landscape (investigator)
The project focused on ecosystem functions and its solution consisted not only in the study of partial processes associated with soils, but its solution also required complex syntheses, which generalized the results of research into physical and chemical properties of soils and their relationship to microbiological properties and vegetation. The main result of the project in selected areas was a comprehensive view of the causes of different ecosystem services due to differences in habitat conditions, land use and management, or also due to the presence of old environmental burdens. In addition to a number of valuable publications, the project also made a great contribution in the field of education, as 21 graduates and 7 doctoral students completed their final theses during its successful implementation.
