VEGA-1/0705/11 Effect of landuse on the stream ecosystem (scientific co-worker) Project summary: The project’s aim is to establish the current state of interactions of land use and aquatic and riparian biota of mountain and submountain streams of Slovakia. The model research objects will include naturall and extreme mountain brooks also, flowing through the area of the Tatra National Park affected by the wind catastrophe. A wide scale of aquatic organisms, fytobenthos, microzoobenthos, meiobenthos and macrozoobenthos, and selected groups of riparian flora and fauna, ecological metrics, and their response to abiotic variables, will make possible a complex view on changes that could be considered as consequence of gradient land use and deforestation and to evaluate trends in forming the communities studied in four-dimensional space time of river networks. The results obtained will represent a valuable base for next investigation of the topical problem.
APVV-0213-10: Biodiversity of river corridors in tropical forests: present state, human aspects and restoration perspectives (scientific co-worker) Project summary: The 2010 is year of biodiversity and so nowadays the questions about our knownledge, negative influences and ways to conserve biological diversity arise more than ever. Proposed project aims to meet this worldwide initiative and contribute to our knownledge on biodiversity hotspots in South America. The main goals of the project are to : 1.) improve information on the fauna of two geologically and biogeographically different ecosystems (Venezuelan table mountains, Andes in Ecuador), 2.) compare diversity (biological, genetic) in the original untouched area with those negativeky affected by humans, 3.) evaluate potential of the preserved areas to serve as source of biodiversity in the renaturation processes.
VEGA-1/0255/15 Community structure and life strategies of macrozoobenthos in carstic springs of Western Carpathians (scientific co-worker) Project summary: The project deals with the study of the macrozoobenthos assemblages structure in karst springs in Slovakia and the analysis of the influence of ecological factors affecting these assemblages at both local and regional scale. At individual and population level, the project is focused on the analysis of the factors governing life cycles, population characteristics, as well as the secondary production estimates of dominant taxa in springs with different temperature and hydrological regime. A special attention will be paid to the life history strategies of macrozoobenthos in temporary springs. We will try to verify the accuracy of already published values of the CPI of selected species in constant temperature springs and to find factors responsible for the differences in the secondary production estimates in different types of streams. Another aim of the project is to define the most valuable springs from the nature conservation point of view, to identify possible threats and to suggest conservation measures.
VEGA-1/0119/16 Effect of riverine landscape and stream regulations on the benthic invertebrates in lotic habitats (scientific co-worker), Project summary: The main goal of the project is to determine the trajectory of the influence of abiotic and biotic factors in the original and degradation-affected streams of the riverine landscape. The original mountain and foothill streams, as well as streams affected by wind calamity and deforestation, were proposed as model objects of research. We will focus on determining the microhabitat preferences of selected taxa, as well as the evaluation of the long-term trajectory of large Slovak rivers and their influence by regulations at the level of species and their ecological characteristics (river continuum and discontinuum). We want to investigate the effects of hydroclimate on the temperature regime of flow and temperature preference of aquatic organisms. We will focus on a hierarchically different spectrum of aquatic organisms - phytobenthos, mikrozoobenthos, macrozoobenthos and fish. Furthermore, on selected isotopes of chemical elements in hydrobionts and their food, in various geological and ecological environments, ecological metrics, indices of river floodplain flows, species characteristics and phylogenetic relationships of macrozoobenthos
/ VEGA-1/0127/20 Benthic Life in Karst Springs: Linkage between ecological isolation of spring and functional composition as well as phylogenetic diversity of the benthic organisms (principal investigator) Project summary: The present project should bring new insights to process forming benthic communities in karst springs of the Western Carpathians. In riverine landscape the karst springs represent the habitats with relatively stable environmental conditions, what determines their unique position in river continuum and makes ecological insularity of this habitat within riverine landscape. From this point of view the springs represent suitable environment to testing of hypotheses about principles of benthic community assembly i.e., whether key role plays the deterministic mechanisms or it is the work of chance. Definition of community at their functional and phylogenetic level belongs to effective approach leading to uncover of this puzzle solution. Identification of the degree of spring isolation, which will be tested in the sense of The Equilibrium theory of island biogeography, will be helpful as the key criterion for evaluation of the rarity, vulnerability and following protection of the spring benthic communities.
