1

2023 – 2026 Principal investigator VEGA (1/0281/23): The effect of various environmental stress factors on improvement of the biological potential of mesenchymal stromal cells for application in autologous therapy and tissue engineering

The mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) application shows promising results, therefore intensive research is currently underway generating outputs for cell therapies and tissue engineering. Even if MSC have low immunogenicity autologous cells are still preferred in clinical practice. The MSC biological properties are compromised with advanced age as well as disease status of the donor. Aged individuals often with advanced disease stages are target population for cell-based therapies/regeneration of damaged tissues. It is therefore essential to develop effective strategies to stimulate the impaired biological potential of autologous MSC. Thus, the presented project focuses on the comprehensive characterization of various approaches of external MSC stimulation (hypoxia, heat shock, etc.) leading to an increase in their biological activity for application in cell-based therapy. It also analyzes the behavior of stimulated MSC after seeding on scaffold (in vitro and in vivo) for potential use in tissue engineering.

2020 – 2023 Co-investigator: Biobank for cancer and rare diseases (ITMS2014+: 313011AFG5)

The project is entirely oriented towards building a modern, efficient and systematic method of biobanking in Slovakia, which represents one of the basic pillars of excellent biomedical research.

Due to the fact that this is a project with strategic importance in the field of biomedicine, academic workplaces, research centers and parks and health institutions that have biomedicine in their programs were integrated into the project, and it is assumed that the highest quality scientific and research capacities with sufficient infrastructural security. In all its specific objectives, the project supports the integration, optimization and further development of research infrastructure, including international scientific and technical cooperation, which is a key element in the implementation of individual project activities.
