Principal investigator in project VEGA 1/0211/19: Posttraumatic stress disorder after childbirth and its association with women's perceived autonomy and respect during childbirth
(2025-2027)
Up to 3- 5% of women develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after birth, and 20-40% of women experience childbirth as traumatic. Postpartum PTSD has a serious impact on a woman's health and quality of life. A woman's perceived autonomy in decision-making during childbirth and respect during birth are an important part of childbirth care, and may significantly influence the risk of developing postpartum PTSD. Research on postpartum PTSD is currently lacking in Slovakia. The main aim of the project is to examine the relationship between perceived autonomy in decision-making and respect during birth and PTSD symptoms; as well as analyze sociodemographic, anamnestic, and perinatal differences in postpartum PTSD and women's autonomy during birth. The project also focuses on determining the incidence rate of PTSD symptoms in the longer time interval after childbirth, and on the validation of the scale of perceived autonomy of women in decision-making during childbirth (MADM scale) in the Slovak language.
Principal investigator for Slovak republic in the project INTERSECT (International Survey of Childbirth-Related Trauma), principal investigator of the project: prof. Susan Ayers (London, UK)
(2020-2023)
https://blogs.city.ac.uk/intersect/
INTERSECT project aims to explore traumatic birth experience and post-traumatic stress disorder after birth (PTSD) in the international context. Main study aims are: determine the prevalence of birth trauma and PTSD across countries and cultures, determine differences in symptom presentation across countries and cultures, and determine the etiology of childbirth-related PTSD symptoms across countries and cultures, as well as determine the intercultural validity of the City Birth Trauma Scale.
Principal investigator in project VEGA 1/0211/19: Psychosocial factors associated with the postpartum depression and screening methods for depression in the postpartum period.
(2019-2021)
Postpartum depression is a serious health problem, which according to current data, affects almost a fifth of women after birth and its incidence tends to rise. Postpartum depression have significant negative impact on the overall quality of life of a woman, process of the adaptation to motherhood, and it can also negatively affect the formation of the safe mother-child attachment. There is still insufficient attention paid to the prevention, screening and adequate treatment of postpartum depression in Slovakia. The main aim of the research project is to examine the relationship between psychosocial factors (partner support, perceived stress, birth satisfaction) and depressive symptomatology among postpartum women. Another aim of the project is to explore the association between postpartum depression and the quality of maternal-child attachment. The research project also plans to validate the Slovak version of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and to examine its psychometric properties.
Participation in project VEGA 1/0333/21, Risk factors associated with posttraumatic stress disorder after birth, principal investigator Ľ. Bánovčinová PhD.
(2021-2023)
Although posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is often caused by an unexpected and traumatic event, its symptoms appear in approximately 3-4% of all postpartum women. However, affected women are rarely identified and treated for PTSD. PTSD after a birth experience, which a woman perceives as traumatic, can have far-reaching consequences, not only for the women themselves, but also for the bond between mother and child, the partnership and the overall functioning of mothers. The main purpose of the research project is to examine the relationship between selected psychosocial factors (partner support, level of perceived stress, satisfaction with childbirth) and the occurrence of symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder in postpartum women. The project also aims to establish a link between postpartum PTSD and postpartum depression. The research project will also include an examination of the psychometric properties of the Slovak version of the City Birth Trauma Scale (City BiTS) questionnaire.
Particiaption in project: KEGA 016UK-4/2021, Standardized patient in Midwifery, principal investigator E. Maskáľová PhD.
(2021-2023)
A standardized patient is a method using a individuals who are specially trained to portray the roles of patients. Midwives meet in their routine practise, a number of different clinical tasks in practice, but also with various emotions of women in the prenatal, intrapartum and postpartum period, and adequate communication with a woman in these periods also plays an important role in their future profession. An effort of undergraduate education, is to best prepare students for practice, and to eliminate the student's potential unprofessional approach to the patient. Due to the increasingly difficulties contact of the student with the patient, it is important to implement this innovative form of teaching into undergraduate educaion of midwives in our conditions, including among the emotional aspect and the possibility of practicing communication with the patient with direct feedback too. The aim of the presented project is the creation and implementation of standardized patients, as well as the creation of multimedia records using this method in order to support interactive and
effective education, and at the same time support distance education in this study program.
