VI.5 - Participation in conducting (leading) the most important research projects or art projects over the last six years
1

VEGA 1/0004/19 Expression and oxidative damage of cardiac proteins during hyperhomocysteinemia. 2019-2022. Principal investigator. Characteristics: Hyperhomocysteinemia is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Molecular mechanisms of adverse effects of homocysteine (Hcy) on cells are not fully elucidated. Aim of this project is to study the role of oxidative stress and altered function and expression of cardiac proteins, mainly in sarcoplasmic reticulum, which plays a key role in the regulation of cardiac contractile function.

2

VEGA 1/0274/23 Effect of neurotoxicants as risk factors on the onset and progression of CNS vascular disorders. 2023-2025. Characteristics: Project includes experiments which describe complex effect of modifiable risk factors - neurotoxic substances in combination with cerebral ischemic-reperfusion damage on laboratory animals and impact of this combination on manifestation of functional, vascular changes and neurodegenerative processes. Study of molecular, biochemical, spectroscopic and immunohistologic changes induced by risk factors and their combination with cerebral ischemia with the aim to identify etiologic mechanisms prospectively utilizable in human praxis.

3

VEGA 1/0014/22 The role of the genetic variations in G1/S phase cell cycle regulators in etiology and prognosis of prostate cancer. 2022-2025. Characteristics: Prostate cancer (PC) is the second most frequent cancer diagnosis and the second cause of all cancer deaths among men reported in the USA and the European Union. Dysregulation of the cell cycle and alterations in cell cycle regulatory proteins lead to uncontrolled cell proliferation in many solid cancer types, including PC. It has been reported, that most of human tumors show defects in G1 to S transition control of cell cycle. The aim of the proposed project is to examine the mechanism how the genetic variation (mainly as SNPs) in genes involved in G1 to S transition (CDK2, CDK4, CDK6, cyclin D, cyclin E, p27, p15, p16 and retinoblastoma) may influence the expression or activity of the corresponding proteins and to assess the functional impact on the risk of PC. We assume that these key cell cycle components should be diagnostically useful and should help for both PC risk assessment and disease progression monitoring.

APVV-15-0107 Role of vitamine D and other markers in the progression of multiple sclerosis. 2016-2020. Co-worker. Characteristics: Characterization of origin and progression of sclerosis multiplex in correlation with the plasma level of vitamin D or its metabolites. Determination of linkage and validity of genetic markers and gene polymorphisms in correlation to the disease progression. Analysis of the influence of vitamin D and its derivatives on genetic DNA modifications and micro RNA expression in model and in patients with various disability progression. Proteomic analysis to quantify damage and to understand in more details the role of vitamin D and its derivatives in the disease progression and possible prevention and therapy.
