VEGA 1/0200/19: "Noninvasive assessment of early atherosclerotic changes associated with obesity"; duration: 2019 – 2022, principal investigator

Atherosclerosis is a degenerative disease of vessel walls. Initial stages of this pathological process occur already at the early stage of individual's development. To identify the early stages of atherosclerosis, several methods have been developed in recent years, including the measurement of the cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) parameter and the reactive hyperemia index (RHI). However, with increasing number of studies, questions dealing with the discrepancy between hypotheses and measured values of these parameters in obese group of patients have come to light.

Evaluation of arterial stiffness (CAVI) and endothelial dysfunction (RHI) in children and adolescents with simultaneous measurement of peripheral vascular resistance, autonomic nervous system activity, anthropometric measures and different biochemical parameters will help to understand the limitations of these methods and will improve our the knowledge of the onset and potentially accelerated atherosclerotic process in young obese patients.
