VEGA 1/0229/15: Study of the association of induced hyperhomocysteinemia with the progression of neurodegenerative changes under experimental conditions.

Despite of intensive research, whether in clinical or experimental medicine, it is not entirely clear whether hHcy can be considered a risk factor for AD. A better understanding of the nature of the mechanisms involved in stroke in association with hHcy could in the future help to streamline postoperative therapy in connection with neurodegenerative changes in the brain as well as the development of AD-type dementia.

VEGA 1/0129/16: Mismatch repair proteins and survivin in pathogenesis of colorectal cancer.

One of the important genetic pathways in the development of CRC is a deficient DNA repair system (mismatch repairing system MMR). CRC is associated with the loss of function of one or more MMRPs. Survivin is a multifunctional protein that inhibits apoptosis, participates in cell cycle regulation and potentiates angiogenesis. MMRP and survivin are considered to be important prognostic parameters and a regulatory mechanism of apoptosis. The aim of the presented project is to determine the relationship between MMRP and survivin in spontaneous CRC.

VEGA 1/0171/18: Influence of induced hyperhomocysteinemia on progression of neuropathological changes with Alzheimer-like features in the experimental model.

The clinical significance of hHcy in the development of stroke and in the prediction of mortality and the development of neurodegeneration has been demonstrated in many studies. In spite of mentioned above, the exact role of hHcy as a independent risk factor for AD is not clear. Elucidation of those mechanisms in ischemic brain a as well as in other key organs could in the future contribute to the streamlining of therapy resp. prevention in patients after ischemic stroke in connection with a disorder of essential amino acid metabolism (as for e.g. hHcy) as well as in the development of cerebrovascular dementia or AD-type dementia.
