The project summary: The aim of the project was to uncover different types of linguistic and other - related communicative - problems faced by individual speakers and entire speech communities in Slovakia, with a special focus on the Slovak as a majority community, then on the Hungarian and Roma as minority but larger communities, and finally on the Carpatho-Germanic community as a small community.

The project summary: Primarily literary and translation studies oriented, the project will explore ways and means of dissemination of scientific knowledge, research results, theories and concepts in the field of social sciences and humanities disciplines such as philosophy, literary studies and its borderline and interdisciplinary overlaps (literary essays, translatology, theory and history of art) in broader cultural and sociological contexts through translations (from English, French, German, Russian and partly from Polish, Spanish and Italian) and their reflection in the Slovak cultural space in the 20th century. It will try to answer the question to what extent the social and scientific valorisation of circulating translation texts was/is present in the receiving (Slovak) scientific and socio-cultural environment, to what extent translations in the 20th century translations saturated the social demand. The project will explore the conditions of translation in its historical context, the status, function and role of translators as mediators, the institutional background and function of translation within the broader framework of literary transfer, which will allow for a more comprehensive picture of this type of translation as a scholarly and creative activity and its place in the history of translation. The research material (social science and humanities texts) is strictly selective; the project does not aspire to cover all thematic and linguistic areas.

The project summary: The project investigates the reception of Dutch and Scandinavian literature in a corpus of contemporary periodical press in Slovakia between 1848 and 1948. In addition, it addresses the question to what extent (and if at all) narratives about the Low Countries and the Scandinavian countries contributed to the Slovak and Czechoslovak national narratives. At the same time, it adds to the history of translation the heretofore unresearched area of translation production from Flemish and Dutch literature published in the contemporary press. Methodologically, the project is multi-layered, drawing not only on the theoretical approaches of literary studies, imagology and discourse linguistics, but also on translatology. It focuses on the cultural transfer between the Nordic, i.e. Scandinavian and Dutch space, and Slovakia, thus contributing to the further exploration of the inter-literary contexts that have co-shaped the Slovak literary system.
