Self-regulation of children at a younger school age - the role of temperament and executive functions
VEGA 1/0640/22
Solution period: 2022-2025
Project leader: doc. PhDR. Barbora Mesarosova, CSc. The main goal of the project is to analyze the relationship between temperament and executive functions in a developmental context and their critical role in the self-regulatory process in children at a younger school age. Children's behavior will be assessed through performance tasks focused on executive functions, by assessing their deficits by parents, as well as through parental assessment temperament. These relationships will also be tested at the biological level, monitoring ANS activity and reactivity during performance tests and at rest. The use of multi-source assessment can increase the validity of findings and better understand age-related changes in self-regulation at both the biological and behavioral levels.
Automated recognition of antisocial behavior in online communities
APVV-17-0267
Solution period: 2018 - 2020
Project leader: prof., Ing. Pavol Návrat, PhD., Co-researcher: doc. PhDr. Barbora Mesarosova, CSc.
The project focuses on research of new models and methods for automated recognition of antisocial behavior in online communities. Antisocial behavior in the online environment is one of the most current and serious problems, which significantly threaten not only the principles on which the website was built, but also have a critical impact on the functioning of society. A typical example is the dissemination of false information through social networks, which influences people's opinions and thus influences their subsequent decisions. Another typical example is the spread of intolerant attitudes, or direct attack on people in the online space. These negative situations were inadvertently made possible by the development of information technology. However, information technology can now also be a means of better understanding and dealing with this phenomenon. However, successfully achieving this goal requires multidisciplinary research. The primary focus of the project is the research of models and methods for automated recognition of antisocial behavior. Explicit models can be developed thanks to data analysis of integrated datasets, but also on a qualitative understanding of malignant content and behavior.
Personality as a source of resilience and risk in chronically ill patients
VEGA 1/1013/16
Solution period: 2016-2018
Project manager: doc. PhDr. Barbora Mesárošová, CSc.
In the project, we undertook to define the concept of resilience, as a framework for its clarification we chose M. Ungar's socio-ecological model. We have provided an overview of its protective and risk factors. In order to clarify the reduced level of resilience in the sample of diabetics (N = 57) and atopic patients (N = 96), we included resilience scales and questionnaires aimed at chronically ill patients - Brief Coping Scale, DASS-42, DKNA... We applied pioneering visual methods (so-called Photo voice), thanks to which we revealed protective factors of resilience, hidden themes and defense mechanisms. In order to improve the quality of diabetes treatment, we have subjected the patient-oriented model to research. It guides patients on how to improve their own treatment regimen, how to treat their body responsibly and how to respect their own needs, values and preferences. An interesting contribution is also the analysis of the influence of relational bonds and negative affects on resilience.
Monitoring and analysis of psychophysiological correlates as indicators of emotional states and personality variables
VEGA 1/1110/12
Solution period: 2012-2015
Project manager: doc. PhDr. Igor Brezina, CSc, co-investigator: PhDr. Barbora Mesárošová, CSc.
The project contributed to expanding the repertoire of diagnostic methods for selected clinical conditions, but also for longer-term settings (personality traits) through psychophysiological indicators. In addition to the use of classical methods aimed at assessing the relationship to neuroticism or anxiety, we also focused on the application of the Psychobiological Theory of Personality by Cloninger et al. In the clinical area, the intention was to use recorded neurophysiological manifestations in relation to the diagnosis of selected psychological disorders and difficulties, as well as psychotherapeutic procedures and interventions with the aim of improving psychological functioning. From a methodological point of view, we focused on the possibilities of validating some questionnaire methods using psychophysiological indicators. From the point of view of basic research, we tried to examine the relationship of selected personality traits and their effects on psychophysiological changes, with regard to the use of new non-contact methods of sensing neurophysiological changes.
