VEGA č. 1/0101/23 - Chief researcher: Epigenetic modifications and cell signaling in the context of secondary metabolism of medicinal plants.
The project is focused on studying epigenetic regulatory mechanisms concerning cellular signaling processes (at the level of phospholipid signaling system – phospholipases, PIP-kinases) and secondary metabolism (at the level of benzylisoquinoline alkaloid production). As an experimental model opium poppy (Papaver somniferum L.) will be used. In plants, epigenetic regulation could represent one of the adaptation ways for gene expression in the event of adverse living conditions. This "fine-tuning" of gene expressions has ably an impact on processes of secondary metabolism. The effect on the production and accumulation of plant secondary metabolites has not been investigated before. The project is designed to identify the correlation between epigenetic modifications and gene expression for enzymes involved in signal transduction, respectively in the biosynthesis of benzylisoquinoline alkaloids in plants and in vitro cell cultures. Total costs suppose 52000€/82000€ (investment/non-investment).
