Project: Specific methods and innovative procedures for assessing performance in athletes and physical fitness in the general population. VEGA MŠVVaŠ SR and SAV, Category A, No. 1/0824/17, Duration: 1/2017 – 12/2019

Characteristics: The project was focused on the design of specific tests and innovative methodological procedures for assessing the performance in athletes and the physical fitness in general population. The 'Sport Longlife Diagnostic Model' and 'Sport-Specific Model of Athlete's Performance Testing' was developed as part of the project. Their proposal was based on an analysis of the tests used so far. The specificity of human motor skills in individual age periods and performance characteristics in specific conditions of particular sports have been taken into account. The proposed testing methods and data analysis can be considered reliable and sensitive enough to distinguish differences in individuals of different ages and performance level, as well as to reveal its changes during life or particular periods of athletic training. Findings were presented in the form of a scoping review “Sport-specific assessment of the effectiveness of neuromuscular training in young athletes“ published in Frontiers in Physiology (Q2, IF 3,201) in 2018 (doi: 10.3389/fphys.2018.00264) and also as a part of e-book “Neuromuscular training and adaptations in young athletes“ published within the same journal (doi: 10.3389/978-2-88945-627-7).

Project: Split-Core Trainer Strengthening System for athletes and untrained individuals with functional back pain. APVV-15-0704, Duration: 7/2016 – 6/2019 (successful completion of the project with the resulting rating of 'excellent level')

Characteristics: The main purpose of the project was to develop a multi-part training system for strengthening trunk muscles in athletes, including paralympic athletes, and untrained individuals with functional back pain. It included the design and verification of the measurement methodology and the specification of the load for improvement of strength of the respective muscle groups. Several cross-sectional studies on physically active individuals and those with a sedentary lifestyle, athletes of selected specializations and people with functional back pain have been carried out. Knowledge and experience gained during the implementation of the project can be used for the design of exercise programs aimed at improving core stability and increasing strength of the trunk muscles, as well as preventing back pain when they are unilaterally or excessively loaded in certain sports and professions, or, conversely, when paravertebral muscles are weak due to a sedentary lifestyle. The output of the project is two utility models (PUV 5048-2014 and PUV 74-2018) and two patents (PP 5038-2014 and PP 34-2018). An overview of the analyzed literature on this issue is summarized in a book „Špecifická záťaž ako rizikový faktor bolesti chrbta“ (Kováčiková, Zapletalová, 2018) while findings of experimental studies are presented in a scientific monograph „Funkčná diagnostika v rehabilitácii a prevencii zranení“ (Zemková, 2019).

Project: Assessment of sensory and motor component of movement skills in athletic training and rehabilitation. VEGA MŠVVaŠ SR and SAV, Category A, No. 1/0089/20, Duration: 1/2020 – 12/2022

Characteristics: Within the project, we analyzed possibilities of assessing the sensory and motor components of movement skills. Most tests used in practice assess mainly their motor component, while the sensory part is often neglected. Although the test is designed to assess sensory function, it usually includes also a motor task. The enhancement of the athlete's performance after training aimed at improving cognitive functions is therefore often attributed to the improvement of the sensory component, but these changes can also be ascribed to an increase in the motor component. The same is true for assessing the extent of impairment of sensorimotor functions under fatigue caused by prolonged or high-intensity exercise. This issue is also related to diagnostics of people with impaired coordination due to illness or injury. Although it is not possible to clearly separate these two components, we proposed possibilities of indirect assessment of their contribution to performance in the respective tests of coordination abilities.
