STICS (Smart Transformation and Innovation Consortium Slovakia), Next Generation EU. 2025-2027

The STICS consortium accelerates innovation transformation through its own development, testing and implementation of solutions and cooperation across sectors. We remove barriers between demand and supply, build the foundations of a functional innovation market and do it transparently – through co-creation and co-design with the involvement of all relevant actors. Most innovations are tied up in local governments; therefore, STICS is turning the data jungle into a clear highway of innovation and opening it up to anyone who wants to improve life in municipalities and cities and strengthen the competitiveness of Slovakia.

Horizon2020 Making City, Energy efficient pathway for the city transformation: enabling a positive future 2018 – 2022

Coordinated by the CARTIF Foundation, MAKING-CITY is a 60-month Horizon 2020 project launched in December 2018. It aims to address and demonstrate the transformation of urban energy systems towards smart and low-carbon cities based on the Positive Energy District (PED) concept. Cities today play a key role in the fight against climate change by significantly reducing their carbon emissions. The PED operating models developed under MAKING-CITY will help European and other cities around the world adopt the long-term Urban Vision 2050 for energy transition and sustainable urbanization, while transforming citizens into actors of this transformation. The PED concept will be tested and validated in two “Lighthouse” cities: Groningen (Netherlands) and Oulu (Finland). It will subsequently be replicated in 6 "Folder" cities: Bassano del Grappa (Italy), Kadiköy (Turkey), León (Spain), Lublin (Poland), Trenčín (Slovakia) and Vidin (Bulgaria). The technologies selected for implementation in the project are mature or already on the market. The PED concept appears to go beyond current European building regulations by bringing fundamental structural, social, economic and technological changes to cities.

BISON – Horizon 2020 – Biodiversity and infrastructure synergies and opportunities for european transport networks 2020-2022

Biodiversity and Infrastructure Synergies and Opportunities for European Transport Networks (BISON)

In Europe, the need to make infrastructure more sustainable for biodiversity while ensuring their reliability and efficiency is urgent.

Indeed, Europe needs to adapt its existing infrastructure to new climatic conditions (floods, droughts …), as well as find innovative and sustainable solutions to reduce the impact of invasive species and address the decline of native species and ecosystem fragmentation. Simultaneously, the sharp rise in the development of new transport infrastructure, especially in Eastern Europe, must support economic development while paying particular attention to the local biodiversity, which is often endemic.

Faced with these needs, for the first time the European Union funds a 3 million euros Coordination and Support Action project on the topic of transport and biodiversity issues. As part of the last calls under H2020, the BISON project is timely to set the ground and upscale research on these topics in the next European research framework programme 2021-2027 (HORIZON EUROPE).

Horizon Europe MOBILITIES FOR EU. 2024-2029

The project is coordinated by CARTIF and builds on the expertise of 29 partners from nine European countries, who bring a wide range of knowledge and expertise to pave the way for the transition to urban mobility. In order to test the potential of innovative mobility technologies in real and diverse urban environments, these technologies will be widely demonstrated in two lead cities, Madrid (Spain) and Dresden (Germany). Five replication cities – Ioannina (Greece), Trenčín (Slovakia), Espoo (Finland), Gdańsk (Poland) and Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina) – intend to replicate the processes of the lead cities and design their own adaptations for the tested solutions.

Effective management of innovation-oriented territorial clusters

The main subject of the project is the development and the model testing of effective management of innovationoriented territorial clusters based on identification of the key elements and key factors of interaction among the economic actors, the public sector and the academic sector. Its purpose is to create a proper environment for acceleration of transformation of the regional economies towards innovation-oriented circular economy. The conceptual proposal is based on the principles of multilevel polycentric governance as defined by Nobel Prize laureate Elinor Ostrom and is combines with currently widely debated concepts of triple/quadruple helix, management of fuzzy and spaces framing the development of widely integrating socio-ecosystems and self-learning communities. This solution opens up space for optimalization of decision-making system and effective management built on partnership and distribution of work among various levels and various actors of spatial development, between public and private sector, among research institutions, schools and production sectors, among the flagships of the economy and small and medium sized enterprises, start-ups and spin-offs.
