Mobilities4EU – Horizon Europe, New MOBility solutions for clImate neutraLity in EU cITIES, main responsible expert

MOBILITIES FOR EU aims at demonstrating that innovative passenger mobility and freight transport concepts designed and implemented following participative and user-center principles are cost-effective and feasible solutions to contribute significantly to the cities’ transformation towards climate-neutrality, allowing to speed up the process even to reach SCOPE 2 emissions reduction in 2030. Madrid (Spain) and Dresden (Germany) will implement 11 pilots comprising 27 very innovative solutions for mobility of people and freight, exploiting the combined potential of electrification, automation and connectivity, from the design to the implementation and evaluation stages acting as Lead Cities (LC). Both cities also ambition to act as pioneers of this process, taking advantage of multiple already existing initiates of social engagement and empowerment that will be integrated in the idea of Urban Transport Labs (UT-Labs), conceived as Innovation Hubs with the aim of fostering faster upscaling and replicability at EU level, making 5 Replication Cities (Ioaninna–Greece, Trencin–Slovakia, Espoo-Finland, Gdansk-Poland and Sarajevo-Bosnia&Herzegovina) through their own UT-Labs direct participants of the processes and later on main protagonists of their own designs.

MAKINGCITY - Horizon 2020, Energy efficient pathway for the city transformation: enabling a positive future 2018 – 2024, expert

A H2020 PROJECT

Coordinated by the CARTIF Foundation, MAKING-CITY is a 60-month Horizon 2020 project launched in December 2018. It aims to address and demonstrate the urban energy system transformation towards smart and low-carbon cities, based on the Positive Energy District (PED) concept.

Today cities have an essential role to play in tackling climate change by significantly reducing their carbon emissions. The PED operational models developed in MAKING-CITY will help European and other cities around the world to adopt a long-term City Vision 2050 for energy transition and sustainable urbanisation whilst turning citizens into actors of this transformation.

The PED concept will be tested and validated in two Lighthouse cities: Groningen (Netherlands) and Oulu (Finland). It will be then replicated in 6 Follower cities: Bassano del Grappa (Italy), Kadiköy (Turkey), León (Spain), Lublin (Poland), Trenčín (Slovakia), and Vidin (Bulgaria).

The technologies selected to be implemented in the project are mature or already on the market. The PED concept appears as a step beyond the current European building regulations by bringing major structural, societal, economical and technological changes in the cities.

STICS (Smart Transformation and Innovation Consortium Slovakia), Next Generation EU. Project leader.

The STICS consortium accelerates innovation transformation through its own development, testing and implementation of solutions and cooperation across sectors. We remove barriers between demand and supply, build the foundations of a functional innovation market and do it transparently – through co-creation and co-design with the involvement of all relevant actors. Most innovations are tied up in local governments; therefore, STICS is turning the data jungle into a clear highway of innovation and opening it up to anyone who wants to improve life in municipalities and cities and strengthen the competitiveness of Slovakia.

BISON – Horizon 2020 – Biodiversity and infrastructure synergies and opportunities for european transport networks 2020-2022, expert

Biodiversity and Infrastructure Synergies and Opportunities for European Transport Networks (BISON)

In Europe, the need to make infrastructure more sustainable for biodiversity while ensuring their reliability and efficiency is urgent.

Indeed, Europe needs to adapt its existing infrastructure to new climatic conditions (floods, droughts …), as well as find innovative and sustainable solutions to reduce the impact of invasive species and address the decline of native species and ecosystem fragmentation. Simultaneously, the sharp rise in the development of new transport infrastructure, especially in Eastern Europe, must support economic development while paying particular attention to the local biodiversity, which is often endemic.

Faced with these needs, for the first time the European Union funds a 3 million euros Coordination and Support Action project on the topic of transport and biodiversity issues. As part of the last calls under H2020, the BISON project is timely to set the ground and upscale research on these topics in the next European research framework programme 2021-2027 (HORIZON EUROPE).

SaveGREEN – Interreg - Safeguarding the functionality of transnationally important ecological corridors in the Da-nube basin 2020-2022, lead expert

Many valuable ecological corridors of the Carpathian and other mountain ranges in the Danube region are impeded or threatened by economic development such as linear transport infrastructure construction or intensive agricultural, forestry, or water management practices. The reason for this conflict is that they are not sufficiently planned with the goal to maintain ecological connectivity and flow of multiple ecosystem services that these Green Infrastructure elements provide. Mitigation measures such as green bridges are often missing or dysfunctional because of inadequate design, location and inappropriate management of surrounding land use by e.g. agriculture or forestry. The impacts are traffic-kills and lowered reproductive success of key species dependent on functional corridors.

The project SaveGREEN aims to demonstrate ways of designing appropriate mitigation measures and maintaining or improving the functionality of ecological corridors through integrated planning. It thereby builds on key results of the DTP projects TRANSGREEN, ConnectGREEN, and HARMON. Monitoring the impact of such measures will help us to learn and derive proper recommendations for follow-up action and policy design. The focus of the project will be on critical ecological corridors of the Alpine-Carpathian Corridor, SW-Carpathians, Zakarpattia, Beskydy, Lyulin and Balkan mountains impacted by linear transport projects and unsustainable land use.

We will foster cross-sectoral collaboration, build capacity for replication of pilots and upscale results through improved policy frameworks. The project partnership covers key sectors to be involved in integrated planning of mitigation measures: nature conservation (ministries, agencies, authorities, NGOs), research and education (universities, research institution), transport (ministries, motorway companies) and consultancy business (limited company) and ASPs from complementary sectors from AT, BG, CZ, FR, GE, GR, HU, RO, SK and UA.
