Upon completion of the course, the student understands the main terms and concepts of postcolonial studies (e.g. discourse, hybridity, etc.). France's role in the constitution of the European Union and its current position, international organisations on French territory, the activities and cultural influence of UNESCO. French foreign policy, electoral system, France and the problem of immigration, defence of democracy and attitude to fundamentalism, suburban syndrome. Education system, multiculturalism vs. French identity.

Romania: Romania's role in the south-eastern region of Europe. Romania and Moldova between Russia and the EU. NATO interest and influence in the Romanian region. The impact of domestic politics on Romania's international position. The relationship of national culture to current multiculturalism and interculturalism. Emigration of Romanians, their language and identity in new ethnic environments.

Italy: Italy and its importance in the political context of Southern Europe; Italian personalities who have contributed to the construction of Europe and the European idea; Italian federalism; regional aspects and specificities of Italy; Italy's current position in the decision-making mechanisms of Europe and the European Union; Italy and its cultural legacy for the present.

Teachers will prepare materials for the syllabus from the most recent thematic literature on the languages concerned. The teaching will also include inviting diplomats, translators, representatives of cultural diplomacy working in the countries concerned, people from the EU Representation in Slovakia, etc., so that students have the opportunity for professional discussion and the opportunity to obtain interesting information from experts with international experience.

Historiography of translation in Slovakia and related disciplines; characteristics of translation space and inter-literary relations in the Romance and Central European, specifically Slovak, cultural spaces; determinants of Slovak translation; history of translation from Romance literatures - the problem of periodization, periods, tendencies; key texts of the history of translation from individual Romance languages; important Slovak literary translators from Romance languages.

Course grade weighting (midterm/final): 50/50

Graduates of the course will have acquired an overview of translations and translating from the given Romance languages, the cultural and literary impact of this cultural area through literature; they are familiar with the basic problems of the historiography of translation, have knowledge in the issue of inter-literary relations and know what factors in Slovakia have influenced the literary translation and reception of Romance literature, especially in the 20th and 21st centuries.

After completing the course, the student has a basic orientation in the concepts and methods of comparative literature research, necessary for its study from the areal aspect. The graduate is oriented in the issues of literary reception, the position of literature within culture, intercultural relations, national and transnational communities, issues of literary translation, the relationship between literature and art, thematology and imagology, and deepens the theoretical knowledge acquired in previous courses devoted to issues of theory and study of literature. He/she is able to use them practically in the critical reading of a literary work, learning to perceive the overlaps of literature and its narrative value for the critical perception of the life world. The acquired knowledge will enable to improve the quality of editorial, translation and pedagogical literary practice.

Explanation of the basic concepts in the area of publishing. Finishing and proofreading of original/translated text. Text treatment techniques. The work of the editor nowadays. Editor, information sources and criteria for selecting an original work for translation. Collaboration with the author/translator in the various stages of text preparation. Preparation of information and promotional materials about the forthcoming book for different media and their specifics. Preparation of own editorial editing of a short text translated from one of the Romance languages into Slovak. Expert discussion with publishers and invited editors with experience of texts from the Romance language area.

Course assessment weighting (continual/final): 100/00

The student has mastered a basic theoretical knowledge of editorial and redaction work. The student is able to identify the different stages of the processing of an original/translated text from the submission of the manuscript to the publication of the literary work, and has an overview of the participants in the editing process and their competences. The student has acquired a basic orientation in the publishing environment in Slovakia, gained personal experience of manuscript processing and personal contacts with editors of Slovak publishing houses.

30% of the total assessment is based on active participation in classes; 70% of the evaluation consists is due to successful completion of the final oral exam in the form of analysis of two of the discussed fiction works. Credits will not be awarded to a student who receives less than 60% of the total assessment. The student is allowed max. 2 absences without giving a reason.

Individual thematic areas will be illustrated with examples from specific literary works chosen for current academic year.

After successfully completing the course, the student has knowledge of phraseological units of the French language and their morphological and semantic specifics. The student has practical knowledge of the interpretation of phraseological units within different types of discourse, as well as of the detection of their motivation and updating, which is essential for the correct understanding of written or oral discourse. The student will also recognize so-called culturemes and proverbs and understand contrastive phraseology within Francophone countries (Belgian, Swiss, Canadian, African French). Knowledge and practical skills in this area are an essential part of the student's future linguistic practice, as well as their profession as a specialist in the Francophone world and its culture, as a translator and interpreter or as a teacher.

A concentrated study of selected issues in French literature of earlier periods, with special attention to 19th-century literature, using a literary-historical approach and textual analysis of specific works. The student is well versed in the context of early French literature and the dynamics of change in literary movements and genres. Interactive learning results in a deeper understanding of literary relationships, the ability to take an analytical approach, and literary interpretation based on reading selected works of early French literature.

Students develop their translation skills and the ability to work with primary and secondary sources of information in search for an optimal translation solution. They become acquainted with the specifics of legal texts, their stylistics and terminology, as well as with the characteristics of the French and Slovak legal systems and with the documents encountered by a court translator in their work. Thanks to their knowledge of the French legal system and various tools they can use (paper dictionaries, online databases, parallel texts, websites), the student is able to correctly understand, interpret and translate a legal text, while being well acquainted with the work of a translator of legal texts.

There is no need to study the literature. The course follows the Introduction to Corpus Linguistics seminar, and the instructor provides students with the necessary materials for each specific task within the language corpus.

a) during the semester, the student will receive 50 points of the overall evaluation on a continuous basis based on active participation in class, preparation of assignments and exercises in the Aranea language corpora as well as other required work in the seminar that arises from the material covered,

b) in the examination period, the student will receive 50 points for the final written work based on the work with the corpus and the analysis of the search results. The student will submit this work in the examination period. The student will be given a choice of topic to work on as instructed by the teacher in the examination period. The topics of the written work are updated regularly.

After completing the course, the student is able to work independently with the Aranea language corpora with a focus on French and Slovak. The acquired knowledge can also be used when working with other electronic language corpora. The work with Aranea corpora is aimed both at deepening the knowledge and skills in the practical mastery of the French language, and the student perceives the corpus as a very good tool in the work of a philologist and editor (creating glossaries, checking phenomena in context, comparing translation solutions in the corpus, etc.), as well as in the work of a foreign language teacher, where the language corpus has a variety of uses (creating exercises, illustrative material, reflective grammar, etc.).

The lector works with materials (different types of texts, exercises, films, recordings) that are related to the topic at hand and are aimed at greater or lesser competence difficulty. It is not necessary to study the literature.

The student will receive 100 points of the overall continuous evaluation based on work in class, participation in conversational topics, regular submission of homework, preparation for class, and conversation review tests on the material covered in the oral parts.

Credits will not be awarded to students who receive an overall evaluation of less than 60 points based on the average calculated from the work in class, homework, and review tests.

A brief overview of the history of textual interpretation; the nature and contexts of literary interpretation; the basics of textual semiotics and hermeneutics; literary and literary-educational interpretation; the reader (expectation, experience, experience and its verification); natural language and the language of the literary work; the speech act and the literary text; the code of literary genres; the contexts of the literary work; model interpretations of the literary text.

Graduates master the basic methods of interpretation of literary text focused on textual semiotics and hermeneutics. They are able to use interpretation as an understanding of the literary text and to uncover its meaning and the way it is presented. They are able to deal with interpretation as one of the key activities of cultural and social practice, which is integral to the functioning of language as a means of literary and interpersonal communication. The skills acquired from specific analyses and from theoretical knowledge will improve their work with text from translation, editorial, publishing and pedagogical perspectives.

On the basis of the knowledge of linguistic systems and specifics of French and Slovak acquired in previous studies, the student is able to focus on the key problems of translation as a meeting of two cultures and two linguistic expressions when working with a text. After completing the course, the student is able to identify the main methods applied by the translator of a selected fiction text, to characterise different approaches to the translation of a fiction text on the basis of a comparison between the original and the translation, to name the translation method, to be aware of and make practical use of all the contextual vectors of the original and the translation. These knowledge and skills are the basis of editorial work on a translation text.

A thematic seminar focusing on the reading and analysis of French dramatic texts from different historical periods. The seminar is based on the analytical reading of French dramatic works, their commenting or comparing on the basis of the given criteria in mutual cooperation between the teacher and the students.

Upon the completion of the course, the student will be able to master the basic common written and spoken communication in the French language. The content of the material covered is based on the Common European Framework of Reference for languages, in this course it is level A1 (the student is not required to have any prior knowledge of the French language). The student understands and can use familiar everyday expressions and the basic vocabulary intended to meet specific needs. He/she can introduce himself/herself and others and can ask and answer questions such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she owns. The student can lead simple conversations provided the communication partner speaks slowly and is ready to help. In the courses, the 4 basic language competences are developed in parallel: comprehension (listening/reading), speaking (oral interaction/independent oral expression), writing and grammar.

This course builds on the content of French for Romance Studies 1 and deepens the knowledge acquired at the A1 SERR level for languages, and continues the content and curriculum of this course.

The student can communicate in common situations requiring simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and common matters. After completing the course, the student has an overview of African literatures written in Portuguese (Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe), he/she knows the main authors and their works and is able to analyze them by applying the acquired knowledge of literary studies. Upon completion of the course, the student has a deeper knowledge of a specific area of lusophone literature. The student is familiar with the most important women of twentieth-century and contemporary Portuguese literature and is familiar with the development of their work in relation to the historical context. He/she can interpret selected works and identify their distinctive features.

After completing the course, the student has a deeper knowledge of a specific area of lusophone literature. The student is familiar with Lusophone prose with exile themes, and can analyze different forms of adaptation in a foreign environment and the inner experience of exiles. Through selected works, the student understands the historical context and has knowledge of the Lusophone diaspora in the world.

After completing the course, the student knows the pronunciation rules of the European variant of the Portuguese language, he/she is able to communicate in Portuguese on common topics and in everyday situations, and knows the basics of Portuguese grammar and vocabulary.
