After successfully mastering the course, the student has language competence in distinguishing ancient Greek dialects, starting with the oldest documented dialect, Mycenaean, knows their epigraphic documents and basic characteristics in the fields of phonology and morphology. He has an overview of phonological and morphological developments from the Indo-European proto-language, through prehistoric to the classical period, and thus better understands the synchronous form of the Greek language.

Upon successful completion of the course, the student has knowledge of the literary, historical and political context of the work of Roman elegists, the specifics of their poetic language and the artistic goals of their poetry. He/she is able to interpret elegiac poetry both from the point of view of historical facts as well as poetics. He/she can work with secondary literature on the topic as well as with commentaries and can critically evaluate the sources, analyze and understand the poetic text. He/she will show his competence in the paper /seminary work. The student is able to evaluate the adequacy and quality of available translations of elegiac poetry into Slovak and perfectly masters the recitation of an elegiac distich.
The student has read the compulsory reading (pensum), which by default represents an overview of the elegies of Tibullus, Propertius and Ovid. Pensum may vary.

Upon successful completion of the course, the student acquires knowledge of the literary-historical work of Titus Livy, as well as the socio-political events that stood at the background of his writing. He/she gets acquainted with the specific features of Livy’s language with emphasis on archaic style and artistic means, thanks to which the author won the favour of his readers. The student has completed compulsory lectures from Livy’s history and is able to work with modern commentaries and critically evaluate Livy’s style as well as the rhetorical means he uses. On the basis of the acquired knowledge, the student is subsequently able to critically approach Livy’s work and offer its interpretation.

Upon successful completion of the course, the student acquires knowledge of the literary-historical work of Tacitus, as well as the socio-political events that stood at the background of his writings. He has accomplished the reading sections from Tacitus's works Annals and Germania and is able to work with modern commentaries and critically evaluate Tacitus’s style and language. On the basis of the acquired knowledge, he/she is subsequently able to critically approach Tacitus’s work and offer its interpretation.

After successfully completing the course, the student has knowledge of the Latin literary and partly colloquial language in a diachronic perspective. He is familiar with selected epigraphic documents of the archaic period. He knows the language contacts between Latin and the languages neighboring it on the Apennine Peninsula, he knows the forms of dialects and the problem of the language/dialect relationship on Italian soil. He is able to identify the differences between the archaic and late Latin language from the language of the classical period on the phonological, morphological, syntactic and lexical levels. He knows the general characteristics of the so-called Vulgar Latin and the Proto-Romance language. He can work with secondary literature on the topic, commentaries on texts and critically evaluate information from them, which he will demonstrate in a seminar paper.

The student knows how the texts of ancient Greek literature were transmitted from antiquity to the first printed editions. He/she masters the principles of Greek manuscript studies and possesses a basic knowledge of Greek paleography and codicology. The student can read selected manuscripts. The student who completes the course, masters the correct pronunciation and the selected phenomena of Modern Greek language (morphology, syntax). He knows these phenomena and can use them in practice. He is able to have a simple conversation in the Modern Greek language, as well as to translate simple sentences from Modern Greek into Slovak and vice versa. He has further built up his vocabulary.

Continuously 45%, in the exam period 55%. The mid-term evaluation reflects the preparation of translations for lessons, class work and translation skills (35%) and seminar work (10%). During the semester, the student is obliged to thoroughly prepare the assigned Greek texts (lexicon - excerpts from dictionaries, grammar, working translation), which will be analyzed and translated in class. The student is allowed during the semester max. 2 absences with proven documents. In case of further absence for serious reasons (substantiated by documents), the teacher will assign the student substitute tasks, the fulfillment of which will be a condition to justify the absence. During the examination period, the student passes an examination, a written test of a prescribed reading, and completes an oral colloquium on the text. The exam question includes a translation and analysis of passages selected by the teacher from the board. The exact scope of the pension will be specified in the first hour of the course. Violation of academic ethics results in the cancellation of the obtained points in the relevant evaluation item.

He/she understands the basic specificities of the Greek philosophical language, including philosophical terminology. During the teaching period 45 %: an in-depth preparation of the reading pensum and active participation in the classes 35 % and a seminar work (10 %). In the examination period: 55 %. During the semester, the student is obliged to thoroughly prepare the assigned Greek texts which will be analyzed and translated in the class (excerpts from dictionaries, grammar, working translation).
During the examination period, the student passes an examination: a written test and an oral colloquium. The exam includes a translation and an analysis of a selected passage. During the semester active participation in the seminar ant the preparation of partial tasks regarding the topic of a particular lesson: e.g. the preparation of a thematic vocabulary, watching of a short Latin video, reading of a short Latin text, which will be the focus of a discussion during the lesson, etc.
The assesment reflects the active work of a student during the lessons and their overall Latin language competence acquired in the course of the seminar.
Two absences are allowed during the semester.

1. Familiarization with the content of the seminar and with the literature, presentation of its individual topics in a simple style in Latin. Students will introduce themselves and present their expectations through simple questions and a questionnaire prepared in Latin.

Presentation of the study in Latin at the Vivarium Novum Institute (Italy) with listening to a short Latin video and songs from their production.
4. Vita quotidiana I.: Cibi et potus - Discussion of what we eat and drink, the differences in gastronomy in ancient Rome and today, against the background of a short passage from the Latin epic on chocolate (Tommaso Strozzi, De mentis potu sive de Cocolatis opificio).
5. Vita quotidiana II: Cibi et potus - On the culture of wine drinking in Antiquity, Humanism and today based on the reading of a short Latin passage from Vincent Obsopoeus’ De arte bibendi.

After successfully completing the course, the students will expand their Latin vocabulary not only from classical Latin, but especially from modern Latin, which will eventually enable them to communicate in Latin on common topics that are relevant even today. At the same time, the students will gain experience in reading and interpreting not only ancient but also modern Latin texts, especially contemporary Latin-language literature in translation for young adults. Class work will enable them to improve their understanding of spoken Latin text through listening to Latin podcasts and videos, and subsequently to communicate in Latin using the direct method.

The student can take the state exam a) after obtaining at least such number of credits that after
obtaining credits for successful completion of state exams, they achieve the necessary number of
credits for the proper completion of studies, b) after successful completion of compulsory subjects,
compulsory elective subjects, and elective subjects in the composition determined by the study
program, c) after fulfilling the student's obligations arising from § 71, par. 3 letter b of the Higher
Education Act, d) if no disciplinary action is taken against them. Successful completion of the
state exam is one of the conditions for successful completion of the study program. The subject
of the state exam is evaluated by the committee for state exams using the grading scale A-FX.
The evaluation of the state examination or its part is decided by the examination committee by
consensus. If the examination committee does not reach a consensus, the evaluation of the state
examination or its part is decided by voting. On the basis of the wording of the study regulations
of the faculty (Internal Rules and Regulations 5/2020, Art. 15), the framework dates of state
examinations are set by the dean in accordance with the faculty's academic schedule. Departments
are obliged to publish the dates of their state exams on the website no later than 5 weeks before
they take place. The student registers for the state exam through the academic information system
(AIS) at least three weeks before it takes place. The student is entitled to one regular and two resit
attempts of the state exam. The regular attempt is the one for which the student applied for the
first time within the deadline set for state exams. If the student was evaluated with the FX mark
on the regular attempt of the state exam, the student may take resits of the state exam a) on the
following dates assigned for state examinations in the relevant academic year or b) on the dates
assigned for state examinations in one of the following academic years in accordance with § 65,
par. 2 of the Higher Education Act. If the student is unable to come on the day of the state exam
for which they have registered on serious grounds, they are obliged to apologize in writing to the
chairman of the examination committee in advance or no later than three working days after the
date of the state examination or its part, if there were serious obstacles that prevented them to do so

the specified period, or if the chairman of the examination committee does not accept their excuse,
they are assessed with the FX grade from that attempt of the state exam.

The student registers and comes on one of the terms of the state examination determined by the
Department. The written exam consists of a translation of two texts from Greek into Slovak: 1. from
a prescribed reading, translation without a dictionary, 2. translation of an unknown continuous text
fwith a dictionary. The oral exam: Translation from Greek into Slovak and interpretation of selected
passages from the prescribed reading: a) 1 text from poetry, b) 1 text from prose. He or she has time
to prepare an oral presentation of their knowledge about the given topic. While preparing, he or she
can use a pen and a blank sheet of paper. The presentation takes place in front of the commission,
after which he or she may be given further questions. The commission decides their assessment
privately; out of the presence of students and guests. The course of the state examination and the
announcement of results is public. The results are announced together; after examining all students
registered for the given term.
Scale of assessment (preliminary/final): 0/100%
The student who passes the state exam has comprehensively mastered the issue of the state exam in
the context of specified areas. The student has theoretical and practical skills based on the current
state of the discipline, as well as the ability to apply and use the skills creatively. He is able to apply
the things he learned to interdisciplinary relationships, is able to think critically. By successfully
passing the state exam, the student proves that he / she masters the Greek language from a theoretical
point of view and is proficient in practical language skills. He is able to translate coherent texts from
Ancient Greek into Slovak. He has systematic knowledge of the language and style of important
representatives of Greek literature according to the prescribed reading (pensum) and is able to
translate and interpret their works.

A student may take the state exam
a) after obtaining at least such number of credits that, after obtaining credits for successfully passing
the state exams, he/she has reached the necessary number of credits for proper completion of the

of the study program. The state exam subject is evaluated by the state exam commission with
classification levels A to FX. The examination commission decides on the evaluation of the state
exam or its part by consensus. If the examination commission fails to reach a consensus, the
evaluation of the state exam or its part is decided by voting.
In accordance with the wording of the Faculty Study Regulations (RP 5/2020, Art. 15), the
framework dates of state exams are set by the Dean and the Faculty Study Schedule. Departments
are required to publish their
dates of state exams on the website no later than 5 weeks before their date. The student registers
for the state exam via the academic information system at least three weeks before its date.
The student is entitled to one regular and two retake dates of the state exam. The regular date is
the one for which the student first registered on the date set for the state exam. If the student was

exam or its component by consensus. If the examination commission fails to reach a consensus, the
evaluation of the state exam or its component is decided by vote.
In accordance with the wording of the Faculty Study Regulations (VP 5/2020, Art. 15), the
framework dates for state exams are set by the Dean and the Faculty Study Schedule. Departments
are required to publish their state exam dates on the website no later than 5 weeks before their date.
Students register for the state exam via the academic information system at least three weeks before
the date of its holding.
A student is entitled to one regular and two retake dates for the state exam. The regular date is
the one for which the student first registered on the date set for the state exam. If a student was
assessed with an FX grade on the regular state exam date, the student may take the retake dates
for the state exam
a) on the following dates for the state exam in the relevant academic year or
b) on the dates for the state exam in one of the following academic years in accordance with
Section 65, Paragraph 2 of the Higher Education Act.
If a student cannot attend the state examination date for which he/she has registered for serious
reasons, he/she is obliged to apologize in writing to the chairman of the examination board in
advance or no later than three working days after the date of the state examination or its part, if
there were serious obstacles that prevented him/her from apologizing in advance. If a student does
not appear for the state examination or its part on the specified date without an apology, or if the
chairman of the examination board does not accept his/her apology, he/she is assessed with a grade
of FX for the given state examination date. The assessment (A-Fx) reflects the level of acquisition
of theoretical knowledge about ancient literature and culture and its traditions with an emphasis
on Latin-written culture.

A student who passes the state exam comprehensively masters the issues of the state exam in the
context of the specified areas. He has theoretical and practical knowledge based on the current state
of knowledge.
By successfully passing the state exam subject, the student demonstrates that he knows ancient
Roman literature and culture recorded in Latin. He has theoretical knowledge about the work of
significant representatives of Roman literature and is able to interpret their works in a literary, social
and historical context. He is able to demonstrate solid knowledge in some specialized subdisciplines
according to his focus - linguistics, mythology, Roman religion, medieval studies, neo-Latin studies,
history, Roman law.

The student must submit the master’s thesis within the deadline specified in the schedule of the current academic year for the relevant date of the state exam. The master’s thesis is submitted in electronic form via AIS. The work must meet the parameters determined by the internal quality system of Comenius University. The provisions of Article 14 of Internal Regulation no. 5/2020 (Study Regulations of the Faculty of Arts of Comenius University) apply to the evaluation of the master’s thesis.
The supervisor of the final thesis and its opponent will prepare evaluations of the master’s thesis and propose a grade in the A-FX grading scale, which the student receives a minimum of three working days before the defence.
Grading scale: 0-59% -FX, 60-67% -E, 68-75% -D, 76-83% -C, 84-91% -B, 92-100% -A
Master’s thesis evaluation criteria:
1. The contribution of the master's thesis, the fulfilment of the objectives of the thesis in its assignment, and the requirements for the content of the master's thesis given by the internal quality system of Comenius University. It is assessed whether the student has worked on the chosen topic at the level of scientific study, with a representative selection of scientific literature, with appropriately chosen scientific procedures and hypotheses that can be verified. Demonstration of the ability to work creatively in the study program is evaluated and the degree of demonstration of knowledge and understanding of the diploma thesis is reflected.
2. Originality of the work (master’s thesis must not be plagiarized, must not infringe the copyrights of other authors); the documentation for the defence of the master’s thesis also includes protocols of originality from the CRZP and Theses systems, to the results of which the thesis supervisor and the opponent express their opinions in their evaluations.
3. Correctness and accuracy of citation of used information sources, research results of other authors and group authors, correctness of the description of methods and working procedures of other authors or group authors.
4. Compliance of the structure of the master’s thesis with the prescribed composition defined by the internal quality system of Comenius University.
5. Respecting the recommended length of the master’s thesis (the recommended length of the master’s thesis is usually 50 – 70 standard pages = 90,000 to 126,000 characters, including spaces), the adequacy of the length of the thesis is assessed by the thesis supervisor.
6. Linguistic and stylistic level of work and formal adjustments.
The student orally presents the content, achieved goals, and conclusions of the master’s thesis, and answers the questions and comments of the thesis supervisor, opponent, or members of the examination committee. The committee will comprehensively evaluate the quality of the master’s thesis, assess the method and form of defence, and the student's ability to adequately respond to comments and questions from the evaluations of the thesis supervisor and the opponent. The student receives their final grade based on the average of the assessment of the thesis supervisor and opponent from their evaluations, and the assessment of the examination committee.
The student has mastered the basic requirements of writing a scientific text in compliance with the rules of academic ethics. The student knows the methods used in the field of study, is able to work on the chosen topic of the master’s thesis at the level of scientific study, with a representative selection of scientific literature, with appropriately chosen scientific procedures and hypotheses that can be verified. After a successful defence of the master’s thesis, the student is able to design, implement, critically reflect, and justify his research intention. The student understands the context of the problem, can clearly define research conclusions, state his positions, and make recommendations. He can respond argumentatively and flexibly to questions about the research topic, its methodology, and its conclusions.
The student is proficient in practical language skills and general orientation in theoretical knowledge of Greek and Latin language, Greek and Roman culture and tradition and readiness to work in
classical languages.

In the examination period, a final test is written, where to obtain an rating A one must have at least 92%, to obtain a rating B at least 84%, to obtain a rating C at least 76%, to obtain a rating D at least 68%, to obtain an rating E at least 60 %.
The student is allowed during the semester max. 2 absences with proven documents. He will prepare a special written task in agreement with the teacher for any further absence (justifiable for serious reasons).
Violation of academic ethics results in the cancellation of the obtained points in the relevant evaluation item.

Upon successful completion of this course, students have an overview of the language situation in ancient Europe, they will know where which languages were spoken, have knowledge about the contacts between these languages. Students are able to compare different chronological stages of languages in different parts of Europe and are also familiar with their written systems.
