The student gains knowledge about the ancient civilizations of the Near East, Egypt, Syrian and Palestinian district, and the Aegean area. The student has basic overview of the historical and social development and of the political, social, economic, and cultural history of the civilizations. II. Byzantine iconoclasm. On the issue of the use of images in the early Christianity during the 4th - 7th century. The beginning of iconoclasm in Byzantium. The cult of images after 843.

III. The beginnings of Macedonian dynasty. The reign of Emperor Basil I. The patriarch of Constantinople Photius and the beginnings of the Byzantine renaissance

IV. Emperor Constantine Porphyrogennitus and his world. The Byzantine Empire at the height of its power during the Macedonian dynasty. Social and cultural changes in the Byzantine world. De administrando imperio.

V. Byzantine Empire in the 11th century as seen by the Byzantine intellectual Michael Psellus. The schism of 1054 and its consequences.

VII. The Byzantine Empire and the West in the era of the Crusades. The Byzantine princess Anna Komnena and her world.

VIII. Byzantine Empire during the reign of the last Komneni. The reign of Emperor Manuel I and the relations with the Latin West.

IX. Decline and fall of Byzantium in 1204. The sack of Constantinople during the 4th Crusade and its consequences.

X. The restored Byzantine Empire in 1261. The last dynasty of Byzantium. The reign of Emperor Michael VIII Paleologus and his relations with the Latin West.

XI. The last days of the Byzantine Empire. The efforts of the last Paleologi to save the Empire and their diplomatic contacts with the West. Byzantium and the Latin world in the 14th and 15th century. Two Byzantine scholars - Demetrius Cydones and Georgius Gemisthus Plethon.

XII. The end of the Byzantine Empire in 1453. Byzantium after Byzantium: the spread of Byzantine culture and heritage in medieval Europe.

After completing the course, students acquire an overview of the basic historical stages of Byzantine history from the period of 7th - 15th century. They also acquire information about important events and personalities of medieval Byzantium in the mentioned period.
