The course focuses on a period in the cultural history of Vienna during which the city functioned as the “cultural capital” of Europe – the fin de siècle. The main thematic areas of the course include: the Ringstrasse Era; Viennese culture of literary salons and cafés; Viennese visual art around 1900 (Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele); the literature of “Young Vienna”; Viennese decadence; Vienna and Sigmund Freud; Vienna as a “melting pot” (Slavic Vienna, Hungarian Vienna, Jewish Vienna); moments of Vienna’s influence on Slovak culture and literature; and the image of Vienna in Slovak literature.

Students will acquire knowledge of Vienna as a cultural center of the Habsburg Monarchy, which significantly influenced the entire Central European region while also intensively receiving and transforming cultural impulses from individual Central European regions, as well as knowledge of the reception of Vienna in other cultural areals. Based on a specific topic, students will prepare and carry out a specialized field trip, during which they will also complete seminar assignments. The course also includes the development of organizational and presentation skills, as well as the ability to conduct research and work with primary sources.
