Practical issues of using Slovak in a bilingual environment are addressed in individual exercises. Emphasis is placed on the consolidation of the user's linguistic competences in the context of editorial work. Issues of orthography and lexicology as well as the specifics of terminological registers (especially with regard to the most frequent journalistic genres) are reflected. In the course during the semester the student will submit solutions to 5 assignments. The maximum point value of each solution is 20 points (1 point = 1%). Upon successful completion of the course, the student has a general knowledge of linguistic disciplines. He/she has basic information about the history of linguistics (with emphasis on the development in the so-called scientific period); an overview of the most important linguistic theories; data about linguistic disciplines and methods; knowledge about the structure of language and its functioning in the process of communication; knowledge about the characteristic features of Indo-European and non-Indo-European languages (with emphasis on Uralic and Slavic languages), etc. At the end of the course the student is able to explain basic concepts from the field of general linguistics, to characterize individual levels of the language system, to characterize languages according to the genealogical typological and areal classification (with emphasis on Hungarian and Slovak languages) and to use basic linguistic terminology.

After successful completion of the course, the student has knowledge of the phonological and morphological level of the Hungarian language within the thematic areas of organs of speech and their function, the system of Hungarian vowels, suprasegmental means; flexible words, non-flexible words, grammatically indifferent words and conversion between word types. The student knows the phonological system of the Hungarian language, the criterion of the functioning of word types in a sentence and in a text and is able to apply them adequately in linguistic practice.

After successful completion of the course, the student has a basic knowledge of the development of early Hungarian literature from the beginning to the 18th century, knows the relevant artistic tendencies, styles and directions (e.g.: humanism, renaissance, mannerism, baroque, etc.), the most important literary genres (e.g. legends, chronicles, genres of religious poetry and prose, etc.), the first linguistic and literary sources and monuments of Hungarian literature. Literature, socio-cultural aspects of the period, acquire skills in the analysis of literary works of early Hungarian literature. The student will also learn basic philological approaches to the sources.

Upon successful completion of the course, students will have an overview of selected issues in contemporary Hungarian linguistics and literary studies. They develop the habit of attending academic events and become part of the academic community in their field of study.

Upon successful completion of the course, the students will have acquired theoretical knowledge in some specific areas of sociolinguistics (especially variational sociolinguistics) and stylistics. In addition to the problems of linguistic diversity and linguistic variation, they will also become familiar with different homogeneous and heterogeneous styles, professional registers and contact varieties. They will also learn how to use this theoretical knowledge in practice, i.e. in the production of texts in different genres and styles.
