During the course, students acquired knowledge about sociological approaches to the study of culture, socialization, and social interactions. Students are able to sociologically analyze selected characteristic features of culture and identify how an individual becomes a social being through the acquisition of culture in the process of socialization. They gain knowledge about the behavior of individuals in various social groups and society through the concept of social roles and through the presentation of different forms and modes of social action and social interactions. The course focuses on clarifying the topic of social order, mechanisms of its maintenance (self-control, forms of social control, types of social sanctions) and forms of behavior in relation to social norms (conformity, nonconformity and social deviations). During the course, students became acquainted with the given sociological concepts. They know and know how to use sociological theories explaining the causes of conformal, resp. deviant behavior. The course is an introductory subject to the study of sociology. It is focused on presenting the basic principles of sociological thinking about the world around us. These principles are reflected in the general theoretical and methodological alternatives of sociological explanation. At the same time, the course demonstrates to students that a full understanding of sociological theories and research procedures requires knowledge of their genealogy and of the development of the discipline as a whole. For this reason, the course is divided into three interconnected blocks: historical, theoretical, and methodological.

By completing the course, students will be introduced to the basic historical, theoretical, and methodological contexts of sociology as a discipline. They will become familiar with the fundamental principles of sociological thinking and will understand the relationships between theoretical and methodological perspectives in sociological explanations of social life. Upon completion of the course, students will be familiar with fundamental statistical concepts and theories. They will understand the assumptions, basic principles of statistical methods, as well as computational algorithms. Students have acquired and developed competencies and skills for the critical analysis of theoretical texts. When working with sociological texts, they are able to: interpret selected topics from the perspective of classical and modern sociology; identify and explain parallels and discontinuities between classical texts and their contemporary reinterpretations. The Sociology of Technology course provides a critical examination of the complex relationship between society and technology. It enables students to recognize the ubiquity of technologies in everyday life and fosters their understanding of how technologies interact with and are embedded within society. Technologies are not only a driving force of social change, but also an outcome of our technological imaginaries. The course also encourages critical thinking about the ethical issues associated with technological advancement and its impact on various social processes and social groups. After completion of the course, students will be able to use of basic tools of statistical software for analysis of quantitative survey data. Upon completion of the course, students will possess knowledge of the origins of sociology as a science and will be able to understand concepts in contemporary sociology that are rooted in classical sociology. The course prepares students for further study in the field—not only in the history of sociological thought but also in sociological theories and research methods, which students will be able to perceive in their developmental dynamics.

The course is divided into two blocks. In the first block, students will be able to identify the historical circumstances surrounding the formation of sociology as a science and address questions regarding why classical sociology is considered "classical" and its relationship to contemporary sociological knowledge. This section introduces the fundamental perspectives through which classical sociology can be studied. In the second block, students will become familiar with key figures in sociology (Weber, Durkheim, Simmel, Marx), as well as the currents and paradigms of sociological thought (positivism, Marxism, functionalism, psychologizing sociology, and the sociology of knowledge), including the origins of sociology in Central Europe. They will gain knowledge of the first major sociological studies and the issues involved in the formation of quantitative and qualitative empirical sociology and its main methodological paradigms within the context of the evolution of theoretical sociological thought.

The core of the course content lies in a genealogical interpretation of the development of modern sociology, building upon the study of the history of classical sociology. The chronological presentation of the history of the discipline is combined with a systematic approach. In the first part of the course, students become familiar with the development of modern sociology as a whole and with the relationship between theory and method in modern sociology. The second part is devoted to the main intellectual currents and paradigms of sociology in the second half of the twentieth century.

After completing the course, students will be able to present sociology as a discipline in its developmental context, orient themselves within the fundamental theories and major approaches that have shaped the field, and identify the principal representatives of sociological theory and the concepts that co-create its contemporary form. In addition to gaining a deeper understanding of the development of the discipline, graduates of the course will be better prepared to design their own sociological research projects, choose appropriate methodological approaches, and apply corresponding interpretative frameworks.

For the substantive processing of the bachelor’s thesis topic (theoretical preparation, conceptualisation), specific recommended literature will be specified by the supervisor at the beginning of the semester and during the course of the topic’s development.

The course is conducted in the form of group and individual assignments and consultations between the supervisor and students enrolled in or accepted for the bachelor’s thesis topics offered by the supervisor.

Continuous assessment (50%) is based on the evaluation of ongoing assignments related to the processing of the bachelor’s thesis topic, in accordance with the supervisor’s requirements, focusing on the conceptual preparation of the bachelor’s thesis and the subsequent project preparation of the empirical research.

At the end of the course, students submit a working version of the theoretical part of the bachelor’s thesis (a substantive treatment of approaches to the topic, including the selected methodological approach) and a directly related structured proposal of the empirical research project of the bachelor’s thesis topic (final assessment 50%).

A minimum of 60% in the continuous assignments is required to successfully pass the continuous assessment. The schedule of continuous assignments, the method of evaluation, and the specification of the structure of the submitted research project will be announced by the supervisor at the beginning of the semester (depending on the specific nature of the bachelor’s thesis topic).

After completing the course, the student will develop the ability to apply knowledge from sociological theory and methodological courses in the independent preparation of an empirical research project, which will be part of the student’s bachelor’s thesis.

The student will acquire knowledge of the individual steps involved in the conceptual and project preparation of empirical research. They will understand the purpose of identifying the researched social phenomenon, operationalising key concepts, and transforming them into observable indicators with direct empirical reference in relation to the specific topic of their bachelor’s thesis.

13.Sociological Concepts of Poverty and Social Exclusion (definitions and methods of measurement, causes and consequences of poverty)

The course focuses on the social science analysis of one of the main thematic areas of sociology of social problems - social inequalities. Upon successful completion, students are able to identify the main types and different forms of social inequalities. They will gain skills to analyze selected types and forms of inequalities in Slovakia as well as the wider spatial context, they will gain information about the extent and characteristics of these types and forms of inequalities. At the end of the course, students are able to use selected sociological terms and concepts and have mastered sociological approaches to their grasp and cognition. They can use the acquired knowledge in theoretical and empirical research of these phenomena and social facts.

After completing the course, students will have knowledge of the subject matter and focus of (social) demography, selected demographic phenomena and processes, population development, and its causes and consequences. They will be able to identify the important social, cultural, economic, and political contexts related to these phenomena and processes.

The individual lectures and seminars of the course will cover the following dimensions of the topics: the internal structure of a phenomenon – selected indicators; historical development (primarily focusing on developments in Slovakia); comparison – both the regional aspect within Slovakia and international comparisons.

Students will be able to apply relevant demographic and sociological theories and statistical data. They will learn and improve their skills in working with such data and will know how to use available data sources. Using these, they will be able to analyze the development of demographic processes and the population structure of Slovakia according to various criteria.

Students will use the acquired knowledge in both theoretical and empirical research of the mentioned phenomena and processes.

Upon successful completion of the course, the students master the basic approaches and procedures in market research, they will be able to write a survey assignment and evaluate the criteria of the survey, or the suitability of individual procedures with respect to the research problem and question.
