The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the basics of ethnological and anthropological research of rituals. The aim of the course is to familiarize students with various historical and contemporary approaches to fairy tales. The course will focus on identifying narrative structures that refer to landmarks in the life and calendar cycles. Students will learn to distinguish corresponding motifs in different variants of fairy tales using ritual-narrative syntax. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to apply the knowledge they have acquired in a critical assessment of the use of fairy-tale motifs in various media.

Course on Fieldwork Methods

Students will participate in a 10-day (possibly collective) field research at the end of the summer term in a selected location. They will conduct ethnographic interviews with at least 20 respondents (or a minimum of 20 hours) according to the chosen topic, using participant observation and visual documentation methods. Participants will demonstrate compliance with the requirements by active participation in consultations during the research, audio recordings of the interviews, a structured ethnographic field diary (according to the syllabus of the course Fieldwork Methods) and photo documentation.

The overall grade is then summed up to 100 % and evaluated according to the ECTS A = 100-91% B = 90 – 81 % C = 80 – 73 % D = 72 – 66 % E = 65 – 60 % FX = 59 – 0 %.

Violation of academic ethics will be punished, and the student will lose all the received percentage in the relevant assessment.

100% in the exam period: practice

Students acquire the skills necessary for long-term ethnographic field research, increase their sensitivity to observation, listening, and semi-structured interviewing, and practice practical ethnographic field note-taking. After the practicum, students will classify the collected data professionally and submit it in the form of a Fieldwork Data in the following semester. Students will acquire the skills necessary to be able to adequately observe, recognize, and describe a social situation, while being interested in the perspectives of the participants in the social situation and the ethnographic context.

The student completes at least 3 consultations during the process of the writing of thesis. By the end of the teaching part of the winter semester, the student will submit a thesis based on the field practice, which will include: 1. at least 40 pages of material obtained from interviews 2. an introduction with a description of the research topic, research and location 3. Conclusion with a summary of the findings on the research topic, own evaluation, or comparison with the literature 4. appendices with photo material, list of informants, literature

Upon completion of the course, students will gain an overview of the basic categories and concepts of ethnicity, ethnic identity and nationalism. The student will learn to analyze the ethnic quality of culture and way of life and ethnic changes or community dynamics, as well as the practical application of ethnic theories on the example of ethnocultural/ethnic groups in Slovakia.

The lecture part of the course will convey theoretical approaches to ethnic identity and ethnicity in the context of the territory of present-day Slovakia (as well as in the broader context of Central Europe). The mid-term evaluation (50%) consists of the evaluation of assignments and active participation in discussions.

At the end of the course, students present a field research project, which they complete as part of the final bachelor's thesis. The project is approved by the student's supervisor (final evaluation, 50%). REQUIREMENTS

The course consists of regular consultations between students and their thesis advisors, the dates of which are set by the advisor. Students will be required to progressively prepare assignments related to the analysis of empirical data collected during field research for their thesis. If a student fails to attend at least three consultations, credits will not be awarded. During the exam period, students will present the results of their analysis and their interpretation in relation to the research questions at a seminar, where they will receive feedback from their peers.

Acquire knowledge about the specifics of ethnographic museum institutions. We will progress through several concepts: the historical emergence and development of ethnographic museums; the ethnic significance of ethnographic museums; the anthropological significance of ethnographic collections; systemic presentation in open-air museums; and ethnographic collections.

1. During the semester (20%): presentation of essay in powerpoint. Oral presentation of the essay in 15-20 min. Relevant summary of key ideas, clarity of presentation (15%) and formality of presentation (5%) are assessed.

2. In the examination period (80%): essay The essay of min. 8 standard pages must be based on at least 5 scholarly sources. Formal criteria such as adherence to the editing, referencing, spelling and stylistics (15%) and the quality of the treatment of the topic, structure, logic of the text, realism of intentions, use of relevant sources (45%) are applied in the evaluation. A text that contains unattributed quotations (plagiarism) is graded Fx. The text must also include 1. introduction (intentions, structure, sources) 2. body of the thesis - according to the chosen structure 3. resume/conclusion (summary of essential facts) 4. sources; annexes, if applicable

Presentation and elaboration of the essay in total at least 60% of the essay is a prerequisite for the course.

The teacher will accept a maximum of two absences with documentation.

The exact date for preliminary assessment and the topic of the paper will be announced at the beginning of the semester. The dates for the final assessment will be announced through AIS no later than in the last week of the instruction period. Violation of academic ethics will be punished, and the student will lose all the received points in the relevant assessment.

Students will learn about selected areas of the way of life in the second half of the 20th century in Slovakia - housing, food, clothing, family and local community life, rituals and festivals. They will learn about the forms of everyday life, their causes and factors. They will learn about the culture of the socialist period, its specificities, factors and the context of its development.
